The Effect of Light Scattering by Dust in Galactic Halos on Emission Line Ratios

چکیده

We present results from Monte Carlo simulations describing the radiation transfer of Hα line emission, produced both by HII regions in the disk and in the diffuse ionized gas (DIG), through the dust layer of the galaxy NGC891. This allows us to calculate the amount of light originating in the HII regions of the disk and scattered by dust at high z, and compare it with the emission produced by recombinations in the DIG. The cuts of photometric and polarimetric maps along the z-axis show that scattered light from HII regions is still 10% of that of the DIG at z ∼ 600 pc, whereas the the degree of linear polarization is small (< 1%). The importance of these results for the determination of intrinsic emission line ratios is emphasized, and the significance and possible implications of dust at high z are discussed. Ja n 20 04 X - ray Scattering Halos from the Galactic Center : Implications for Diffuse Emission Around Sgr A ∗

We consider the absorption and scattering of X-rays observed from the Galac-tic center. One objective is to characterize the intrinsic X-ray emission from the central black hole, Sgr A * , in its quiescent and flaring states — crucial for our understanding of the accretion physics of supermassive black holes. We correct the fluxes observed by the Chandra and XMM telescopes for absorption and sc...

Dust Scattering X-ray Expanding Rings around Gamma-ray Bursts

— Scattering by dust grains in our Galaxy can produce X–ray halos, visible as expanding rings, around GRBs. This has been observed in three GRBs to date, allowing to derive accurate distances for the dust clouds as well as some constraints on the prompt GRB X–ray emission that was not directly observed. We developed a new analysis method to study dust scattering expanding rings and have applied...

Galactic Dust Clouds Are Shining in Scattered Hα Light

Bright emission nebulae, or HII regions, around hot stars are readily seen in Hα light. However, the all-pervasive faint Hα emission has only recently been detected and mapped over the whole sky. Mostly the Hα emission observed along a line of sight is produced by ionised gas in situ. There are, however, cases where all or most of the Hα radiation is due to scattering by electrons or dust parti...

Testing a Model for Interstellar Dust

We use published ROSAT observations of the X-ray Nova V1974 Cygni 1992 to test a model for interstellar dust grains consisting of a mixture of carbonaceous grains and silicate grains. The time-dependent X-ray emission from the nova is modelled as the sum of emission from a ONe white dwarf plus a thermal plasma, and X-ray scattering is calculated for a dust mixture with a realistic size distribu...

Soft X-ray Scattering and Halos from Dust

Small angle scatterings of X-rays by interstellar dust particles create halos around x-ray sources. The halo intensity and its projected radial distribution around a source can provide important information on the spatial distribution of the dust along the line of sight to the source, and on the physical properties of the scattering dust particles. Halos around x-ray point sources have been use...
